Julian has worked on medieval houses, castles, cathedrals, and country houses, and is interested both in the archaeology of buildings and the link between documentary history and extant remains of the past. With an interest in urban and rural landscapes, he has examined the relationship between places, their physical remains and written history, and has published numerous studies.

He often undertakes investigation and assessment of historic buildings and places for planning purposes, and has been involved in a series of Conservation Plans for national monuments (castles, country houses and cathedrals), for National Trust, English Heritage and others, and planning assessments of greater and lesser buildings of all types and periods.

Julian is involved in teaching and outreach activities, and is a frequent public speaker on many aspects of the historic environment. He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries (FSA), has often appeared as an expert witness at public inquiries and planning hearings. He is Chairman of the Chichester Cathedral Fabric Committee (FAC).

Rachel graduated from the University of Durham with a BA in Archaeology and Anthropology and has worked in the North West for more than 30 years, during that time gaining a wealth of knowledge about the archaeology of the region. She acts as Senior Executive Officer: Research and Publications at OA North, in which role she oversees the post-excavation programme from post-excavation assessments through to publications. From its instigation, she has been the Series Editor for the Lancaster Imprints monographs and has overseen the development of the Greater Manchester’s Past Revealed series. She also has an overview of community and research project undertaken by the office.

Rachel has a deep commitment to the archaeology of the region, with a specialism in the early medieval period. She acted as period coordinator for this during the compilation of the North West Regional Archaeological Research Framework, working also as a member of its steering group. She was also a member of the steering group for the Hadrian’s Wall Research Framework, and has acted as a committee member for the last two Hadrian’s Wall Pilgrimages and also the 2019 event, and the International Limes Congress, held in Newcastle in 2009. She is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, President of the Cumberland and Westmorland Antiquarian and Archaeological Society, and Trustee of both the Senhouse Museum Trust and the Mouswald Trust, as well as being active in other local societies.

Rebecca Nicholson graduated with a BA (Hons) in Archaeology and History from the University of York, followed by an MA in Environmental Archaeology and Palaeoeconomy (University of Sheffield) and a D.Phil (University of York). Her professional career started in the 1980s as a technician in the Environmental Archaeology Unit at the University of York, followed by employment as environmental archaeologist for a commercial archaeological unit in Newcastle and academic research posts at the Universities of York and Bradford. She joined Oxford Archaeology as Environmental Manager in 2005.

Rebecca is responsible for designing and co-ordinating the sampling programmes for OAS excavations and liaises with other specialists within and outside OA to ensure high academic standards and to provide an effective outcome for our clients. Her specialism is archaeozoology, particularly the study of fish remains and fishing through the ages, and she has worked on many assemblages mostly from England and Scotland. Rebecca also has an editorial role in other post-excavation projects.

She is a Member of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (MCIfA), a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland (FSA Scot), and member of the Association for Environmental Archaeology.

Adam has worked at Oxford Archaeology North for over thirteen years as a core member of the Illustration and Publications team. He has a number of skills from manual illustration of artefacts, digital illustration and Photoshop work, and use of AutoCAD and GIS packages, to identification and analysis of early medieval artefacts and production of publication text. In this time he has produced a number of archaeological monographs, popular publications, posters, interpretation panels, museum designs, leaflets, digital content for the web, teachers packs, and schools resource boxes. Adam’s primary area of interest is the early medieval period in Britain, particularly Northern Britian, and he has a particular interest in artefacts of the period and their manufacture. He is the co-author of: 'Shadows in the Sand': A viking-age cemetery at Cumwhitton, Cumbria; the academic publication for the important Pagan inhumation cemetery at Cumwhitton, for which he was also the illustrator and typesetter. He is also actively involved in the St Michaels Church, Workington, post excavation project looking at the early medieval burials, finds, sculpture, and phases of the church.

He has also run many outreach events for OA North, including museum events for Tullie House and Carlisle Castle, schools projects and archaeology open days.

Becky has worked for Oxford Archaeology as a Project Officer since 2013 and divides her time between running fieldwork projects and organising the outreach activities for the Oxford office. Most recently she worked on the outreach programme for the large Westgate Oxford development, which involved organising the popular Pop Up Museum, schools visits, open days and website.

Becky graduated with a BSc in Archaeology from Bournemouth University in 2002 and in 2000 with an HND in Practical Archaeology. She joined Oxford Archaeology in 2003 as a field archaeologist and became a supervisor in 2006. She worked on a variety of large archaeological projects, including industrial complexes in the south of Wales, the multiperiod East Kent Access Road scheme in Kent, and a WWII prisoner of war camp in Cherbourg, France. Becky worked for other archaeological companies from 2011, on a post-medieval cemetery clearance and a Environment Agency flood alleviation scheme near Chichester for Archaeology South-East, and then as a supervisor for Network Archaeology on a Mesolithic site near Gatwick airport. She is an Associate (ACIfA) of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists.

Tom graduated with a BA in Ancient History and Archaeology from the University of Liverpool in 2002. Since then he has worked in field archaeology, predominantly in the east of England. As a Project Officer he directed a wide range of fieldwork projects, including the large-scale excavations at Clay Farm, Cambridge and infrastructure projects such as the Bury St Edmunds to Thetford Anglian Water Pipeline. His main research interest lies in landscape archaeology, particularly how landscapes developed and changed during prehistory.

Since 2015 Tom has been a Senior Project Manager, initially in fieldwork, overseeing several large excavations in East Anglia including the Norwich NDR road scheme, and is now part of the post-excavation team at OA East. In addition to his role at OA East, Tom has excavated in Israel and Egypt and has been involved long term with the Blick Mead research project, a Mesolithic site near Stonehenge. Tom is also an Associate of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (ACIfA).

Dan has worked for OA since 1992, starting as a volunteer and working his way up the fieldwork ranks. He has extensive experience of project management and the pursuit of new contracts, gained from his years as a Senior Project Manager and then as head of the OA South Fieldwork and Contracts teams. As CBO, he is responsible for operations company-wide, ensuring quality and compliance across all OA projects. He also leads on business development.

Dan is also responsible for Health and Safety at OA. He is a Technical Member of the Institute of Safety and Health (IOSH). He is a Director of the Federation of Archaeological Managers and Employers (FAME) and is its advisor on health and safety issues. Dan is a Member of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (MCIfA), and also regularly advises the organisation in health and safety matters, as well as being a member of its Registered Organisations Committee. Dan is closely involved in OA’s partnerships, particularly with Pre-Construct Archaeology and Cotswold Archaeology, and leads on the COPA team bidding for work on Phase 1 of HS2.

Dan's main interest is in Anglo-Saxon archaeology and in particular the origins of Oxford. He is a member of the Oxfordshire Architectural and Historical Society.

Liz oversees the post-excavation research and publications function at OA East. Her job is to manage all aspects of post-excavation work, including the finds, environmental and graphics teams. She also edits all of the academic and popular publications produced by the Cambridge team, ensuring that the highest academic standards are maintained and that projects are delivered on time to clients.

Liz graduated from the University of Nottingham with a degree in Ancient History and Archaeology and has a PhD from the University of East Anglia. She has considerable experience in managing complex projects and specialises in urban Late Saxon and medieval archaeology, with particular interest in castle and cemetery studies. She continues to excavate abroad and has worked extensively in Eastern Europe and the Middle East.

Gareth is currently a Project Officer responsible for geomatics at Oxford Archaeology East. He has 12 years experience in UK commercial archaeology after graduating with a BA in Archaeology from the University of Reading and an MA in Landscape Archaeology from the University of Sheffield. He has been directing fieldwork in the UK since 2007 and has also worked extensively on international projects, notably at Al Zubarah in Qatar, as well as in Sudan, Oman, Romania and Jordan. He has written and contributed to articles and monographs as well as publishing his own research in to Iron Age settlement morphology.

In his current position Gareth leads the geomatics team in Cambridge developing new procedures and methodologies, and tests new equipment and software to enhance OA’s geomatics capabilities. He is responsible for dGPS survey, CAD and GIS processing, 3D modelling and photogrammetry, and oversees the logistics of UAV (drone) surveys.

Tomasz has worked in IT since 2004. With a wide scope of experience in retail, management, mentoring and coaching as well as in technical support and client-orientated service, he is known to be an approachable and friendly colleague, with a keen sense of humour and an eye for detail.

Tomasz studied IT and business management at the University of Humanities and Economics in Lodz and proceeded to work in a fast upscale environment, assuring client satisfaction on IT solutions. After a six-year retail career, Tomasz has moved to the UK, where he focused more on technical support and client-orientated IT service.

Tomasz joined Oxford Archaeology in August 2013 and as an IT Project Manager, his role is to train and support OA’s field and office staff. He has also been involved in a production of architectural photography for Oxford Archaeology's buildings department.

In his free time, Tomasz loves the outdoors, photography and kayaking.

Marie graduated with honours from Boston University, Massachusetts in 2002, with a BA in both archaeology and religion. Marie subsequently graduated from the University of York in 2003 with an MA in Archaeological Heritage Management. Since then, she has volunteered with several museums, worked as an outreach officer at Chester Amphitheatre, and has now worked for Oxford Archaeology North since 2006. She is also a member of the CIfA at Practitioner level.

Marie has become a core part of the Illustration and Publications team at OA North, with skills in manual illustration of artefacts, digital illustration, book design and typesetting, and GIS and AutoCAD. Marie is particularly interested in book production, outreach and education, and Iron Age and Roman pottery.

Marie has produced many archaeological monographs, popular publications, interpretation panels, leaflets, reconstructions, and teachers' packs. She also helped produce several issues of OA’s internal magazine, and has helped with several outreach events for OA North.
