24th June 2013:
Our large flagship community project, undertaken with the National Trust, Levens Local History Group, and funded by HLF, is now under way at Sizergh Castle, South Cumbria. The project will allow members of the local community to get involved during July in excavations of an early ditch and a burnt mound, and undertake landscape surveys of the park and a building survey of the magnificent sixteenth-century barn.
On Saturday (22nd June) we had a workshop to introduce the participants to all the activities. It included presentations on excavation methods and finds, palaeoenvironmental analysis and landscape survey. This was followed by practical demonstrations of all the techniques, and culminated with a demonstration of the model helicopter that will be used to generate aerial photographs of all the sites.
