Week 18 Update

The team have returned after the Christmas break to continue with the excavations.

A community excavation of prehistoric sites across Little Asby Common

Little Asby Update

Update 6: A terrific lithic

A surprising find raises questions about ideas of ancestry and history to the people living at Wintringham in the past.

Week 1 Update

Our excavation has started in the north-west corner of the site, with supervised machine removal of the soil.

Weeks 2 and 3 Update

Over the past two weeks, the team have been digging prehistoric pits and Roman ditches.

Introductory Talk - September 2021

Weeks 4 and 5 Update

The team are now supervising the mechanical removal of topsoil across the excavation area in Barrack Field.

Week 6 Update

This week the team hosted a group of veterans from Operation Nightingale.

Week 1

Our excavations commenced with the arrival of team, welfare and plant.

Week 2 - The First Finds

Week 2 saw the continuation of the site strip, the excavation of our first archaeological feature and the recovery of our first artefact.

Weeks 7 and 8 Update

We have revealed the whole site and we're starting to investigate the remains of the Napoleonic camp.

Week 3 - Steady Progress

Despite a rather wet start to the week, the team continue to make good progress on site. 

Week 9 Update

This week we held our first public open day for the residents of Weeley.

Weeks 4 and 5 - It's all making sense.

Despite the weather taking a turn for the cold and wet, progress on site has been fantastic.

Interpreting the heritage from your projects

The first venue for the Pop-Up Museum was within the existing Westgate Shopping Centre itself (prior to partial demolition). It was manned by OA staff for 1 day per week, and volunteers for the remaining time. It attracted many people going about their everyday business
