Geoarchaeology

Early stage geo-prospection techniques can save money and time

The archaeological study of deep sediment sequences, geoarchaeology is now often a requirement during the planning or mitigation stages of developments in coastal or esturine locations.

Oxford Archaeology is among the few archaeological practices in the country that can provide a range of in-house specialist services to cater for the growing demand for this input into developer-funded and other projects. Our Geoarchaeology Department has a team of qualified specialists dedicated to providing advice and assistance during the various stages of the planning process.

The majority of work we undertake locates, recovers and interprets evidence of past landscapes; establishing the nature of man-made and natural buried sediments, predicting their archaeological potential and helping to locate archaeological sites. We also employ a number of in-house specialists in palaeoenvironmental materials (pollen, plant remains, molluscs and faunal remains) that can provide supporting palaeoecological interpretation.

These works can often take place in parallel with other geotechnical ground investigations and can provide rapid up front information on archaeological risk. Undertaken as part a construction mitigation they can substitute for expensive and time consuming traditional excavation methods, reducing risk to budgets and programmes.
