Linton's unusual Saxon burialRecording the human remains

Project: Linton Village College, Linton, Cambridgeshire

Client: Cambridgeshire County Council

Status: Post-excavation analysis and publication in progress

A rare triple Saxon burial was found during archaeological works in 2008 at Linton Village College, ahead of the construction of a class block and sports hall.

The burial comprised a decapitated female and two children, buried at her feet. Two further Saxon burials, each comprising one discrete adult individual, were found nearby. The individuals had also been decapitated.

It is possible that the burials refer to a small execution cemetery, although the presence of a multiple burial, including children, would make this an unusual example.

Detailed osteological analysis of the cut marks associated with the decapitations, their direction, angle and degree of precision, will play an important part in interpreting this discovery.

The discovery was made during a programme of archaeological works that were undertaken by OA East between 2004 and 2010, with those in 2004 in advance of the construction of the Granta school (in the former grounds of Linton Village College) and those between 2008 and 2010 prior to redevelopment of Linton Village College.
