In 1937 Witley Court, a Scheduled Ancient Monument built in 1854-60, caught fire and was never rebuilt. Later both the house and garden were stripped of some architectural details, and the gardens became heavily overgrown.
The site came into public ownership in 1952, becoming the responsibility of English Heritage in 1984. English Heritage carried out an extensive programme of restoration of the house and garden, and wished to reinstate the East Parterre Garden as part of that process.
OA was involved with archaeological investigation within the East Parterre Garden. The programme was intended to inform the conservation and reinstatement of the garden, and mitigate the impact of the reinstatement on surviving archaeological deposits.
