Project: Collaborative Offshore Wind Research Into the Environment (COWRIE)

Client: Cowrie Ltd

Status: Report delivered in 2007

COWRIE Ltd was established to carry out research to support the development of offshore renewable energy sources in the UK. The aim of the cumulative impact project was to develop guidance on approaches to the assessment of cumulative impacts on the Historic Environment in relation to the construction of energy sites, using wind, wave or tidal power.

OA South’s Heritage Management Services, working with George Lambrick Heritage Consultancy, was asked to prepare the guidance, based on its extensive experience of environmental assessment.

Previous EIAs and SEAs for offshore projects were examined and existing guidance documents relating to environmental assessment consulted as part of the process. The guidance takes into account the different requirements of SEA and EIA.

OA organised a seminar in Oxford to present the draft guidance document to an audience of invited stakeholders. These included representatives from energy companies, marine regulatory bodies and the historic environment sector.

The guidance document has been added to the suite of guidance documents published by COWRIE and is available to download from the website.
