Ribble Valley Strategic Study

Project: Ribble Valley Strategic Study, Lancashire

Client: English Heritage

Status:

This joint project with the Liverpool University Geography Department funded by English Heritage concentrated on assessing the potential for aggregate extraction and made recommendations about the commercial viability of taking gravel from different locations and provided better planning advice to the aggregate industry.

The project made wide use of Lidar to examine both the geomorphological and archaeological relic landscape and undertook small specialist studies of certain sites, such as a survey of Clitheroe Castle, which contains the smallest surviving keep in Britain, and Victoria Cave, which contains internationally important Pleistocene animal deposits.
